Ellen Barkin plays high-strung Lynn in this story of a gathering that lays bare the primal forces of family. The gathering hurls Lynn back into long-simmering feuds with her ex-husband (Thomas Haden Church) and his hot-tempered wife (Demi Moore), but also with her pragmatic mother (Ellen Burstyn) and distant father (George Kennedy). But it's the children she is trying to raise and protect now that trouble her the most, and their disturbing behaviour at the gathering makes Lynn an even greater target for blame and ridicule, particularly from her mother and continually inebriated sisters. As Lynn attempts catharsis, her family of origin continues to sweep issues under the rug, yet painful truths continue to bubble up and spurt rancour.
