Driving Miss Daisy
Available on SBS On Demand
Affluent and decidedly independent Jewish widow Miss Daisy (Jessica Tandy: Fried Green Tomatoes; Cocoon) begrudgingly agrees to hire a driver after reversing her brand-new car into the neighbour's azalea bush. At her son Boolie's (Dan Aykroyd: I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry; Ghostbusters) insistence Black Chauffeur Hoke (Morgan Freeman: The Power of One; The Shawshank Redemption), himself a widower, is employed. Warned of Daisy's stubborn nature Hoke is undeterred, greeting bigotry with humour and absurdity with self-assured defiance. Opening in America's Deep South in 1948, it is amidst a climate of great social upheaval that an unlikely friendship is forged. A friendship that will span some 25 years and challenge the limits of prejudice and forbearance. Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman revel in their roles skilfully evoking the depth and complexity of their characters as well as the impact of social and historical conditioning on human relations. Earnest and heartfelt Driving Miss Daisy is an enduring classic.
