James Herriot, a young veterinary surgeon, moves to a small Scottish town and begins his first job in an already established practise.

James discovers that while a vet's life is not altogether enviable, that of a dog might well be so. Tristain plays a practical joke on James but he is able to retaliate.

Routine is shattered when Siegfried employs Mrs Harbottle to be a secretary for the practise which sets everything on its head, while James meets Helen Alderson.

Siegfried wins a major victory and his brother Tristan has to deal with pigs in more ways than one, and James discovers that he has a rival.

The practise is going strong, but James' love life is not; Tristan takes a hand and arranges a double blind date.

James makes a date -- without Tristan's help -- and the practise loses a customer -- with Tristan's help.
