After suffering a nervous breakdown, high profile defence barrister William Travers turned his back on the murder cases that made him his name and moved with his family to Suffolk; he reluctantly returns to London to represent an old friend.

Travers visits his old friend Martin Newall to hear about the murder case and learns about a possible conspiracy.

Travers valiantly fights the ghosts of his past while continuing to probe the Martin Newell murder case. He visits the scene of the crime with Natalie and meets the chambermaid who'll become a key witness.

Travers and Natalia discover Lucy Wilson's history of blackmail, strengthening the case against Martin; Wenborn learns his wife has been shoplifting, causing him to lash out.

Travers learns the murder victim was looking for information on a scandal caused by Martin's employer.
