Amour Fou

A well-to-do, loving couple Rebecca, a doctor, and Romain, a sales manager, live in a small provincial town. But Rebecca is prone to nightmares and seems stressed. When Romain’s unstable younger brother Mickael and his girlfriend Emilie move in opposite them, she grows worried. To add to the tension, Romain is desperate to have a child at all costs, and Rebecca fears she will not be able to fulfill his desire. One evening, when the two couples are having dinner together, Mickael brags that Emilie is pregnant. As the evening deteriorates, Rebecca witnesses her brother-in-law slap his girlfriend. Later, unable to sleep, she watches the house opposite anxiously. The next day, Emilie is nowhere to be seen… Romain and Rebecca demand an explanation from Mickael. A violent altercation ensues, during which Mickael is killed. Distraught, Romain tries to commit suicide. As he recovers in hospital, Rebecca announces that she is pregnant.

Intellectually precocious, 8-year-old Louise lives in the mountains and prefers reading to playground games. But a classmate, Mickael, picks on her violently. The next day, he confides in Philippe, his manager and friend: is he Emma's real father? Later, emboldened by a few drinks, he expresses his doubts to his wife.
