Chanelle Aponte Pearson Aponte Pearson

Impressing critical audiences with her award-winning directorial debut-the web series "195 Lewis" (2014-16), which was the first series to premiere at the BlackStar Film Festival-Chanelle Aponte Pearson created and backed socially relevant art for her entire career. Born in the Bronx, New York, Pearson earned her Bachelors from DePauw University in Illinois and her Masters in public administration from New York University's Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service before becoming the chief operating officer of the Brooklyn-based film production company MVMT. There, she produced the documentary "An Oversimplification of Her Beauty" (2014), a film directed by her partner Terence Nance. Setting to work directing "195 Lewis," Pearson received some help in the form of the Calvin Klein-sponsored "Live the Dream" grant at the 2015 IFP Gotham Awards. The award gave her the funding to complete much needed post production and reshoots, making the series into the phenomenon it would become at BlackStar. In 2016, Pearson was selected as a Vimeo Share the Screen Fellow in 2016, which awarded her six months of tools and support from the Made in NY Media Center by IFP. It was around this same time that she neared completion on her first short film, "Elijah" (2017).
