A young woman who witnesses a pawnshop robbery and murder is stabbed in the back and left for dead. Arriving at the crime scene, Detective Murdoch and Constable Crabtree are surprised to find her alive, although unable to move. Meanwhile, a prison inmate asks to see Inspector Brackenreid. When Brackenreid arrives at the jail, the man is found hanged in his cell but Brackenreid recognizes him as Reginald Pullen, an old army buddy and hero. Deciding to delve deeper into his friend's suspicious death, Brackenreid's enquiries are brought to a halt when another inmate, who was ready to talk, is also found dead in his cell.
A large gash is found on the head of a drowned woman, suggesting the death was not an accident. Crabtree discovers she'd had aspirations to work as a reporter and wrote an etiquette column for the local newspaper. Murdoch begins to suspect she might have stumbled across a bigger story and that her murder was an effort to silence her. But when another young woman is found murdered in a similar manner, he is forced to reconsider.
After a man is brutally stabbed with a pitchfork in a hotel stable, Detective Murdoch's investigation uncovers some strange inconsistencies. Evidence gathered by Murdoch and Constable Crabtree leads them to Carl Rodriguez, a hotel guest who had a gambling grudge with the victim. Meanwhile, Julia's interviews with Felicity Dawes reveal vivid memories of the crime, ultimately yielding a confession. Where does the truth lie?
When Dr Darcy Garland is found shot dead at his home, multiple witnesses place his estranged wife Dr Julia Ogden at the scene. Murdoch faces further complications when Julia lies about her whereabouts at the time of the murder and his vindictive supervisor takes him off the case. Murdoch's insistence that Julia is incapable of the crime does little to assuage his boss's preoccupations, and she is quickly arrested and charged with murder. Will Murdoch be able to save her?
With Julia Ogden on death row for the murder of her husband, Murdoch sets out to prove she was framed by James Gillies - even though he has been suspended. Assisted by Constable Crabtree, Murdoch painstakingly works to demonstrate that the evidence was cleverly fabricated.
