The Ballad of Jack & Rose
Available on Prime Video
For years, Jack and his 16-year-old daughter Rose have lived alone on an abandoned commune, cut off from the influences of the outside world. When Jack is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, however, the pair's safe little world is thrown into complete tumult. Jack invites his girlfriend Kathleen, and her sons Rodney and Thaddius to live with them, a decision that infuriates Rose, who not only acts out chaotically but also begins to explore her own burgeoning sexuality -- much to the chagrin of her father. Meanwhile, Jack rages against those who do not share his environmentalist aesthetic, such as developer Marty Rance, who is building a housing tract on the edge of his property. As things fly out of control, Jack finds himself trapped between a commune and a hard place, and is forced to make the toughest decision of his life. In her third feature film, award-winning filmmaker Rebecca Miller crafts a powerful tale of what happens when the world of our most ideal visions collides with the world as it truly exists.
