The Best of The Carol Burnett Show: Vol. 2, Episode 2
Comedienne Ruth Buzzi was a fan favorite in TV land, thanks to her tenure on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, which ran from 1968 until 1973. Playing the same characters each week perhaps downplayed her acting skills. The "many faces of Ruth" in these sketches allow her some flexibility. She takes a blathering movie star turn with Carol as a librarian in a send-up of the quiz show Password. The musical number that also quotes Longfellow verse spotlights Buzzi as a cute handful of a toy. In a tribute to cinematic naughty ladies, Buzzi is Mrs. Robinson to Richard Crenna's young Ben Braddock. They return to satirize a lousy movie, Born to Be Bad, with Raised to Be Rotten. Carol's portrayal of the cunning Christinabel elevates the arched eyebrow stare to a ridiculous new height.
