Afghanistan: The Wounded Land

In the 1960s, Afghanistan is divided between a westernized elite and a traditional, largely poor majority of the population; a communist revolution sets these contradictions on fire.

The Soviet army enters Afghanistan in 1979; the Afghans call for jihad against the godless invaders, and the "Soviet Vietnam" begins.

The Soviet army leaves Afghanistan, but the war continues between mujahedeen commanders; the country falls into chaos until a new force emerges: the Taliban.

Following 9/11 and the overthrow of the Taliban, an international coalition tries to bring peace and democracy to Afghanistan, but hopes are short-lived.
