It’s the late 22nd century, and the Jovian lizards are attacking earth. Nergal Heavy Industries decides to build its own battleship, the Nadesico, to take on the invaders. Captained by the ditsy yet tactically brilliant Yurika Misumaru, and crewed by an bunch of misfits, does the Nadesico stand a chance against this new threat to humanity?
Uneasy about the idea of a powerful battleship being in the hands of civilians, the United Earth military sends Admiral Misumaru’s fleet to take control of the Nadesico. Will Yurika be able to protect her ship from her own father? And will Akito ever find out the truth about his parents’ deaths?
The Nadesico heads to Mars, but in order to get there, it has to pass through the Earth’s various lines of defense, including the Big Barrier. Can the Nadesico convince the United Earth forces to take down the barrier, or will they force their way through?
The Nadesico heads out to the Satsuki Midori space colony to pick up some new zero-G Aestivalis frames and pilots. After an explosion rocks the colony and disables it, the mission becomes one of rescue and retrieval.
On the long and boring trip to Mars, Prospector insists that Yurika take the time to perform funerals for all those who have been killed. The never-ending task leaves her no time to see Akito or to resolve her feelings towards him.
The Nadesico finally arrives at Mars only to have to fend off an enemy attack. Several members of the crew, including Akito, head out to explore the ruins. They accidently locate an underground colony of survivors who seem to know many of the Jovians' secrets.
