Bored witless after a 10-year relationship with her fawning partner, Sally has a chance encounter with a Bohemian singer and actress that propels her into uncharted sexual and emotional terrain.

It's Sally's birthday. After a subdued celebration with co-workers Nigel, Eleanor and Mick, Sally heads home for a surprise dinner with her stodgy parents, who are shocked when Emma shares details of her lesbian relationship with their daughter. After a phone call from David's mom, David, Sally and Emma take the long trip to his parents' house, where Emma begs Sally to join her in the guest room.

With cracks in her relationship with the cloying Emma emerging, Sally agrees to visit a therapist named Belinda, where she's forced to share some uncomfortable realities about the couple's private life. After a chance encounter with Sally's longtime friend Kate and her husband Dan, Sally and Emma are invited to dinner, where Emma presses Dan, a well-known director, for a role in one of his films. Nigel finds it increasingly difficult to fend off the advances of an overbearing Eleanor.

Sally accuses Kate of trying to undermine her relationship with Emma. Defying Dan’s makeup instructions for her film role as an assistant baker, Emma ends up overplaying her scene, leading to an angry confrontation with the director.

Sally has an unsettling job-performance meeting with her boss Deborah, who's been evaluating Sally and Eleanor as they vie for a promotion. Startled by revelations from David, Sally and Emma consider the pros and cons of having a baby, and weigh possible donors. After Emma lands in the hospital, she and Belinda badger Sally to go the distance in support of Emma.

Sally embarks on an off-site work outing, where she's dismayed to find herself sharing the hotel's honeymoon suite with Deborah.
