DC Rachel Bailey of Manchester Metropolitan Police is angry at beingdumped by her married lover, a barrister named Nick Savage. She joinsher colleague on the major incident team, DC Janet Scott, toinvestigate the murder, made to resemble a suicide, of a pregnantTurkish girl named Emel Yilmatz. They soon discover that she wasmurdered by her husband's mistress. Janet is approached by old friendGeoff to reopen a cold case concerning the murder of her school friend,Veronica. Dreading her own wedding anniversary party, she presses onwith the cold case, and comes to believe that Veronica was murderedby a serial killer. Also in this episode, Rachel finds out that she ispregnant with Nick's child; and she traps the murderer of housewifeSusan Metcalfe.

The detectives arrest a woman on suspicion of the gruesome murder of her husband. Rachel and Janet investigate the couple's involvement in homemade pornography.

Janet moves closer to tracking down Veronica's killer, whilst investigating a recent murder that bears a number of similarities. Rachel finds out about an affair Nick had with a juror in the middle of a trial - a revelation that could end his career. Upon the discovery that Veronica's killer and the serial killer is Geoff, he stabs and critically injures Janet. Janet returns to work after her recovery. A car narrowly misses Rachel and smashes into the side of the road. She discovers it was unquestionably linked to the discovery about Nick's affair. Nick is charged with attempted murder after it is discovered that he paid to have the car hit Rachel.

The syndicate investigates the fatal shooting of a young boy. Janet interviews the only witness.
