In the series premiere, eight Greenlanders, lead by Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett) and his sister Freydis (Frida Gustavsson), arrive in Kattegat for the first time on a mission of revenge. Their quest collides with the gathering of a great Viking army by Prince Harald Sigurdsson of Norway (Leo Suter) and King Canute of Denmark (Bradley Freegard) to invade England.
Harald (Leo Suter) chooses Leif (Sam Corlett) to captain his boat to England for the invasion. By the end of the journey, Leif leaves no one in doubt that he knows what it means to be a Viking. In Kattegat, Freydis (Frida Gustavsson) is mentored by Jarl Haakon (Caroline Henderson), the pagan leader of Kattegat who sends her on a spiritual journey to Uppsala.
With Canute’s Viking army camped outside of London, a great marsh and the London Bridge threaten the Vikings’ plans. Meanwhile, Freydis (Frida Gustavsson) begins her journey to Uppsala but an attack along the way opens her eyes to the conflict between Christian and Pagan Vikings.
