Gregorio wants to do right by her late wife. He confronts the insurance company and ends up losing his job in the bank and his house. Now he’s at the mercy of his children who have to take him in.

Gregorio tries to get used to his first “foster home,” Alicia’s place, a corrala in Lavapiés where any detail must be voted on in assembly. Gregorio learns that Alicia is involved with Julio, her roommate.

Gregorio returns to Alicia's house. He finds out that his usual watchmaker's shop is going to shut because of a neighboring gambling house that is expanding.
