Road to Ruin
We follow the Road to Ruin team as they tackle the Canning Stock Route. This 4WD track is one of Australia's last frontiers and the world's longest stock route, stretching 1850kms. It has no service stations or towns along the route. The environment and track conditions are extremely harsh. There are endless corrugations, sharp spinifex, dust, and scorching heat exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. Our adventurers are without support on the journey. The only provisions for the expedition is the food and water they carry. All breakdowns and failures need to be fixed on the track with the tools packed. Creative solutions are constantly required. Road to Ruin starts with a team of four people and two vehicles, namely a 1975 Land Rover Series III and 2014 Land Rover Defender. They leave Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, and head to the small outback town of Wiluna to start their journey. From there, the Canning Stock Route stretches across three deserts, ending at the small hamlet of Halls Creek on the edge of the Kimberley. From the very first day, the Land Rover Series III suffers unforeseen mechanical issues which makes progress slow. After two weeks, the team reaches the halfway point only to suffer a significant mechanical break. In this moment, the team has to work together to decide how to get themselves out quickly and safely, with both vehicles. Creative repairs are needed to get them back to civilisation!
