Zachary Heinzerling

With a long-time interest in filmmaking, Zachary Heinzerling started his career working on TV documentaries. He worked primarily as an associate producer on such acclaimed HBO sports documentaries as "Breaking the Huddle: The Integration of College Football," "Lombardi," about the life of the legendary NFL coach, and "Namath" (2012), which recounted the flamboyant life and career of the Super Bowl-winning quarterback Joe Namath. It was in 2008, however, that Heinzerling was introduced to Noriko and Ushio Shinohara, a married Japanese couple living and creating art in Brooklyn, New York. Heinzerling became intrigued by their story and spent the next five years doing interviews and documenting their everyday lives. Initially conceived as a short film, Heinzerling saw the rich potential of his subjects and, with the help of grants by the San Francisco Film Society, the Tribeca Film Institute, and several others, was able to see his now feature-length project through to completion. "Cutie and the Boxer" debuted at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival to overwhelmingly positive praise, and eventually went on to receive an Oscar nod for Heinzerling, who also produced the film.
