Andrew Mottram is an animal detective for hire and he is on a mission to photograph the local wildlife - but he is just as happy with what is left behind, because his speciality is scatology, the study of animal faeces. Hotelier Thomas Noblett returns to Dover for his second attempt at swimming the English Channel. At the Langdale Chase Hotel on the banks of Windermere, there is some sad news about the hotel's beloved boxer dog. Near Cockermouth, barrister turned farmer Thomas Ballantine Dykes is hoping his lessons in looking after sheep pay off when it comes to shearing time.
