Poor Tom Is Cold

S1 E102: Constable Oliver Wicken is the sole supporter of his mother and invalid sister. As the burden and pressure of the responsibility becomes too much, he takes his own life. The evidence according to the coroner is irrefutable, a single shot to the temple with his own revolver and a farewell note besides his lifeless body. At the inquest, a young women testifies that she was secretly engaged to Wicken but had broken off the affair that very night - the case is closed - death by his own hand. Detective Murdoch (Peter Outerbridge) is called in when more evidence comes to light taking him far afield, and raising his suspicions about the Eakin family, whose house adjoins the one where Wicken lived. His doubts and fears that it was more than suicide are confounded when the young Mrs Eakin is committed to a provincial lunatic asylum - is she insane as the family says or has she been driven to the brink of insanity from some wicked reason?
