S1 E1: After a sleepless night, Andrew drives to the courthouse with his friend, Frank. Outside, press hassle his wife, Nicci: is she going to win today? The pair lock eyes. Their world stops. Then Nicci disappears inside, leaving Andrew behind. Earlier: After a weekend away, familiar concerns creep in as they return to their daughters, Marnie (13) and Katie (17). Marnie has a rare form of Congenital Muscular Dystrophy, and has spent her life in and out of hospital. Later, Marnie's medical alarms go off and they rush her to hospital. Her doctor, Samantha, tells them Marnie is now stable on a ventilator. The next day, Mercy, Marnie's nurse, asks for a meeting. There, Samantha explains Marnie's health is deteriorating; they believe it is in her best interests to withdraw care. Nicci vehemently disagrees. Andrew is noticeably quiet but promises Nicci afterwards he'll fight with everything he's got. At home, Andrew tells Katie, but can't support her too. Katie meets her girlfriend, Hannah, who gives her a pill. Hannah asks what Marnie takes, but Katie shuts her down. Later, Marnie has another emergency; her family watch, horrified, as medics perform CPR. With tension high, Samantha stabilises Marnie. Looking at Marnie, Andrew is overcome. Her hand tightens briefly on Nicci's. Andrew doesn't see it - and Marnie doesn't move again - but Nicci is convinced she'll improve. Outside the courthouse, Nicci makes an impassioned speech to the press. Andrew is, notably, not with them.
