Enmity between two neighbouring villages leads to such a bloody disaster on both sides that one of the village heads, Sethupathi, swears to kill the son of his enemy. But, the boy is safely taken away to a distant place with help from a loyal servant's son. Twenty years later, a man named Siva arrives in Kumbakonam and settles down opposite the house where a government officer lives with her son.
