The origins of Norwegian Black Metal and a group of young men with a flair for publicity, church-burning...and murder. Oslo, 1987: seventeen-year-old Euronymous (Rory Culkin, Signs) is determined to escape his idyllic Scandinavian life and create "True Norwegian black metal" with his band, MAYHEM. Under the pseudonym Euronymous, he's joined by his band-mates Hellhammer, Necrobutcher and a Swedish misfit known as Dead (Jack Kilmer, The Nice Guys). Revelling in his newfound notoriety and eager to take things a step further, Aarseth opens a record store which becomes a sanctuary for partying and loud music. When a shy geek who calls himself Varg (Emory Cohen, The OA) enters his the picture, a power struggle ensues and vandalism, arson and murder consumes their lives.
