A dim-witted garage mechanic in small-town America becomes a genius after being struck by a mysterious light. At first, his friends are excited by the changes as he reads six books a day, learns new languages in minutes and predicts an earthquake, but his powers soon drive a wedge between him and his friends - and the woman he loves.
