Secret Uprising

Secret Uprising

Available on Prime Video
In scenes reminiscent of Libya, Egypt and Bahrain, masked protesters fill the streets, fling rocks and chant "martyrdom is better than oppression" as police bullets fly. In the Shia-dominated Eastern region of Qatif resentment is at an all-time high; despite vast oil wealth local communities suffer poverty, sectarian discrimination and no political freedom. Protesters have been added to government wanted lists, arrested and even killed in dubious circumstances. One protest leader, Fathil, describes a close escape from the authorities. "They treated us like terrorists. They almost killed us!" Tensions are erupting as incidences of violence by demonstrators fuel a harsh government crackdown and alienate locals. Award-winning Saudi filmmaker Safa Al Ahmad risks arrest and worse to get inside this troubled region.
