The 1980s was the decade when greed was good, but hugs and feeling were on the agenda, too. From pumped muscle toys such as He-Man to the caring, sharing world of the Care Bears, television shows were helping to sell toys that had a moral message.

Franchises came more to the fore, with Lego entering into a mega licensing deal with Star Wars, and Power Rangers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles heaping more and more merchandise onto the market on the back of TV and movie franchises. However, in this curious decade it was the oddities that really stood out - furry Furbies, collectible Pokémon and terminating Tamagotchis.
