Hometown: A Killing
Available on BBC iPlayer
Award-winning journalist Mobeen Azhar spent the first eighteen years of his life in Huddersfield, a place that he remembers as a calm and friendly town. Returning to Huddersfield to report on the death of Mohammed Yassar Yaqub, who was shot dead by police on an M62 slip road in January 2017, Mobeen soon realises that there is a darker side to his hometown and a bigger story to tell. He is forced to confront ugly truths about the place where he grew up as he uncovers gun violence, drug abuse, and turf wars that are taking a terrible toll, with residents terrified to speak out for fear of retribution. The series asks difficult questions about the human cost of the drug trade, to instigate a conversation which is long overdue.
