Ladies of Letters

After Irene's daughter gets married, she receives a thank you note from Vera, with whom she socialised at the occasion. Touched by the gesture, Irene responds to Vera's note, and so begins a correspondence in which the ladies discourse upon all manner of events in their lives.

Irene is romanced by widower Bill, and feeling a little neglected, Vera invites the couple to visit her. To Irene's chagrin, Bill and Vera hit it off superbly, so Bill suggests that the three of them go on a holiday together. However, disaster ensues and Vera and Irene don't speak for two years.

Irene invites Vera for a visit, but long-held insecurities raise their head, when Vera revels in the limelight at a soiree that Irene takes her along to. Worse still, Irene learns that her daughter is moving to Australia.

Vera doesn't take the news of her unmarried daughter Karen's pregnancy very well, but after Irene pays a visit and hits it off with Karen, she and Irene spend some quality time together at Irene's.

Irene finds herself in hospital suffering from amnesia and a prediliction for foul language after an incident with a bulldozer at the demonstration. Hoping that Vera can help with her friend's condition, the vicar asks her to send along mementos to help jog Irene's memories, but alas, Vera's letter is more about her own youth and experiences than of Irene.

A self-censored letter to a jailed Irene, along with her daughter's drug habit, find Vera the subject of midnight police raid, and banged up inside herself.
