'Two eyes are as good as four, and they take up less room. Reuben Rosenthall is an unattractive self-made millionaire which makes him a natural target for Raffles with, or without Bunny.

Raffles may know when to expect the unexpected but poor Bunny is still a comparative innocent. 'The great thing about a burglar's life is you keep coming up against the unexpected so often that you start to expect it.'

Raffles gives the police, society and the Criminologists Club more than a sporting chance when he sets out to prove - conclusively - that he is not the audacious thief they are trying to track down.
