The Great Fire

Four-part drama series inspired by the historical events of 1666 and focusing on events which led to the catastrophic fire. Thomas Farriner is the King's baker, supplying bread and biscuits for the Navy. A widower, Thomas works alongside his daughters Mary and Hannah in his Pudding Lane bakery. Across the city in the palace of Whitehall, while the King is at a stately dance, a terrifying assassination attempt is foiled by the King's intelligence officer, Lord Denton. Later, Thomas returns home to Pudding Lane to find the bakery ablaze and his two daughters asleep upstairs, unaware of the raging inferno below.

As the fire gains strength, Thomas bursts into sister-in-law Sarah Farriner's lodgings to wake his family and lead them to safety. But Sarah is nowhere to be seen and their shouts for her in the street yield nothing. Thomas has no idea that Sarah is being held in a private cell at Newgate Prison, waiting to be interrogated by Lord Denton about a Catholic plot to murder the King. Samuel Pepys brings news of the fire's spread to the King at the Palace of Whitehall and he follows Pepys' advice to survey the damage for himself from the safety of the river. From this vantage point the King is shocked into action, ordering his advisors to tear down buildings to create fire-breaks and to compensate the public for damage.

In Whitehall, the King is angry to learn that his orders to create fire-breaks have been ignored by his advisors. Elizabeth Pepys confronts her husband about his infidelity with Mrs Bagwell, but Pepys pleads ignorance. Thomas finally finds Sarah on the streets, hiding from Denton's men, and together they find shelter from the inferno.

Final episode in the four-part drama series inspired by the historical events of 1666. Thomas has to reveal to Sarah that her husband Will is not dead but has run off to the colonies. Her shock turns to anger as they return to Moorfields. Queen Catherine tells the king in no uncertain terms that James's efforts are failing and it is time he took control himself. Thomas and Sarah's emotional reunion with their children is short-lived when David and Hannah run off to the Navy yards to find out the truth about Will. In the streets, chaos descends as Pepys and his wife witness the lynching of Alfredo the dance teacher. King Charles finally joins an exhausted James, ordering fire-breaks between the houses to be created with gunpowder - but first he has to face down his hostile people. Sarah, Thomas and Mary take refuge from Denton's men in a friendly ropemaker's house, but it is a trap. Sarah is dragged away but Thomas and Mary make their way to Pepys' house to implore him for help.
