The Real Manhunt: The Night Stalker
Available on ITVX
Following in the footsteps of the ITV drama, The Real Manhunt: The Night Stalker sees Susanna Reid interview senior officers from Operation Minstead to tell the real story of the 17-year hunt for the serial rapist known as 'The Night Stalker' and the 17-day stakeout that led to his eventual arrest. Former SIOs Colin Sutton and Simon Morgan speak candidly about one of the most complex investigations the Met has ever had to face and reflect on the tragic mistake that meant he could have been stopped years earlier. The documentary takes us back to the Nightstalker's first attack in 1992 and follows the investigation as dozens of suspected cases emerge over the course of a decade, leading to a DNA swabbing exercise that creates tension between the Met and the black community. Meanwhile, the elderly in South London are terrified. In 2009, there's a huge spike in offences and the Met's hierarchy agrees to stage a huge stakeout in the hope that this time they will catch him in the act.
