At the scene of a raging tower block inferno, seasoned fire fighter Kev Allinson is faced with a heart-pounding decision: rush in alone to save the life of a baby, or wait for back up and risk the infant's death. Heroically braving the flames, Kev's rescue tragically fails when he is violently attacked in the midst of the fire. Left badly injured, Kev is lucky to survive.

After Kev makes the brave decision to reveal his secret to the rest of White Watch, events take a dark turn as he and Mal witness a tragic death. With Mal's muted reaction throwing a spotlight on his failings as a friend, Kev and Trish also have to contend with the strain that Kev's injuries have put on their relationship.

When White Watch are called to a domestic fire, an initially simple operation is complicated when they discover a 33-stone woman trapped in the attic. This has huge implications for the normally cagey Ziggy, who realises that not only is the obese woman someone from her past, but that she also knows a secret she has kept hidden from the rest of White Watch.

Dennis's reckless behaviour in a training exercise causes Mal's disdain for the young fire-fighter to bubble to the surface. But when he attempts to bring his concerns to Kev, he discovers that his old friend just isn't interested. And this bothers Mal: if Kev doesn't start listening to him, then lives could be put at risk on the job. It seems like there is only one solution - either Kev leaves the Watch, or he does.
