Walter Hartright, a young drawing master, encounters a ghostly woman dressed all in white on Hampstead Heath. He offers her assistance, but is later shocked to discover she had escaped from a lunatic asylum.
With Sir Percival impatient to marry Laura, Walter and Marian try to uncover the truth about the role he played in sending Anne to the asylum.
Sir Percival's money troubles drive him to try, by increasingly underhand means, to get Laura to authorise the release of some of her fortune.
Marian eavesdrops on Sir Percival and Fosco plotting how they can get their hands on Laura's money.
