This Farming Life

In Newtonmore, in the Cairngorms, Robert MacKenzie needs to gather in all his pregnant cows back to the croft for pregnancy testing. Costs of feed and fertiliser have shot up, so if not enough are in calf, it may be time to stop farming cattle.

In Inverkip, Rachel and Camy are one year into building their own farm, taking on a tenancy at Dunrod Farm and a big bank loan with the dream of one day owning 5,000 sheep. But a trip to market sees higher prices scupper their best intentions.

In North Uist, the MacDonalds are preparing for one of the biggest events in their calendar: walking their pregnant highland cattle to the island of Vallay. It's only accessible by foot for a six-hour window, which means they must race the tide.

While many are battening down the hatches as winter approaches, farmers are still outside caring for their livestock and making preparations. In North Uist, Fraser and Carianne set off for the mainland to sell their own tups and buy new ones.

Christmas is just around the corner and Scotland's farmers are battling the elements to keep things running. A deep freeze descends on John's farm, creating havoc with the farm machinery and forcing them to cancel their glamping pod guests.

A new year begins, bringing new life and new experiences. Carianne and Alexander take Faillish the bull to the Oban Highland Show, hoping to bag a rosette and sell him for a good price.
