Shipwrecks: When History Resurfaces

In Scapa Flow, off the coast of Scotland, seven wrecks lie dormant at the bottom of the North Sea.

Buried under the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea, to the east of the Isle of Beauty, some fifteen wrecks dating from the Second World War are waiting to be explored. These dives highlight the strategic position of Corsica.

The tragic, yet largely forgotten, story of the disaster that killed over 1,000 passengers outside the small town of Rimouski, Canada in 1914. The disappearance of RMS Empress of Ireland was one of the deadliest boat accidents in history.

In 1942, Japanese forces defeated the United States in the Philippines. The Battle of the Pacific had begun. Today, wrecks from ships and warships on the seabed show the struggle between Japan and the Allied forces during World War II.

On February 11, 1945, the Americans and the Philippine guerrillas liberate Manila. All through the waters of the archipelago, underwater remains tell the story of this liberation and wrecks preserve the memory of the battles of the war.

Operation Dragoon, carried out on August 15, 1944, is told from an underwater perspective in the English Channel and the Mediterranean, where scores of wrecks testify to the battles fought.
