Moira Demos began her career in film as an electrician on features like "Happiness" (1998) and television series like "Strangers with Candy" (Comedy Central 1999-2000). In 2005, while Demos was enrolled in graduate school at Columbia University, she became fascinated with the contemporaneous arrest and life sentence of suspected murderer Steven Avery, beginning work on a film project that might call attention to the injustices she felt inherent to his case and trial. Demos continued to work as a film electrician, amounting jobs on high profile pictures like the Russell Brand comedy "Get Him to the Greek" (2010) and the Angelina Jolie action film "Salt" (2010). Meanwhile, Demos and fellow Columbia alum Laura Ricciardi further developed their Steven Avery idea, meeting with networks like PBS, HBO, and, ultimately, Netflix to find a home for the project. The result of their efforts was "Making a Murderer" (Netflix 2015), a 10-episode documentary series that featured interviews with key people involved in the convicted party's case-including police officers, attorneys, judges, and victims-as well as with Avery's family. "Making a Murderer" marked Demos' first credits as director, screenwriter, cinematographer, and sound recordist. The series earned a great deal of media attention, even attracting public responses from the victims' families and from Avery's ex-fiancée.
