Vikram relates how he as an engineer officer accompanied an infantry unit in a surprise raid on an enemy bridge where there was severe hand-to-hand fighting and where Harildar Kalyan Singh of the infantry Unit sacrificed his life by saving Vikram.

After narrating the incident, Vikram breaks down, as he feels guilty for the death of Kalyan Singh and unknowingly considers himself the cause of Kalyan Singh's death. After visiting Kalyan Singh's house, Vikram finds out that Kalyan was the sole earner and backbone of the family.
