Rie, a girl attending a local school, calls on Muhyo, a child prodigy magic lawyer, and Roji, his assistant, to investigate the haunting of a train station by a ghost she believes to be her late classmate, Taeko.
Schoolboy Kenji sets out to prove that ghosts do not exist, and removes the talisman sealing the door of an old temple outside of town. Nana, a young photography buff and Kenji's older sister, is troubled by images that appear in her photos.
Muhyo and Roji are hired by Aya, an award-winning piano prodigy, who is troubled by a shadowy figure playing her piano in the dead of the night. The case prompts the pair to conduct a spiritual stakeout to catch the culprit in the act.
When Muhyo and Roji are summoned to the Magical Law Association for Roji's advancement test, Nana invites herself along, and meets Muhyo's former classmate, Yoichi. Roji's exam is disrupted by the arrival of a spirit that possesses by touch.
Yoichi tells Roji of his days with Muhyo and Enchu as students at the Magic Law School. Enchu is pushed to the breaking point by his mother's failing health, and turns against Muhyo and the Association, swearing his vengeance.
Muhyo, Roji and Nana are called to a rural hot spring resort by Yontani, a well-known novelist who is residing there. He hires the team to uncover the truth behind his recent best-sellers, claiming that he is not the one writing them.
