Joanna Newsom

Famous for her delicate voice and unique instrumentation, harpist and singer Joanna Newsom first expressed an interest in her trademark instrument when she was only five years old. Raised by progressive parents who forbid her from watching television or listening to the radio, Newsom was exposed to music primarily through her parents' interest in playing it themselves, as her father played the guitar and her mother played the autoharp, hammer dulcimer, and conga drums. Newsom's prospective harp teacher advised her to begin by learning the piano, and the young Newsom complied, eventually mastering the harp as well. By college, she was pursuing music full time. Newsom was soon signed to the label Drag City, through which she released her debut The Milk-Eyed Mender in 2004. She followed it in 2006 with Ys. She spent the next few years working on new material, eventually debuting two hours worth of new songs at an unannounced concert at Big Sur in 2009. Her next album, Have One On Me, came the following year. In 2013, Newsom married longtime partner, actor and comedian Andy Samberg, and even branched into film the next year, narrating and appearing in the Paul Thomas Anderson film "Inherent Vice" (2014). In 2015, she released her fourth studio album Divers.
