Fons Rademakers

Stage actor and director who apprenticed under Vittorio De Sica and Jean Renoir before making his feature debut with the Bergmanesque, Oscar-nominated "Village on the River" (1958). Rademakers went on to establish himself as the preeminent Dutch director of the next two decades, turning out a string of finely executed, psychologically complex dramas such as "The Knife" (1960) and "Mira" (1971). He also produced several films for other directors, particularly his wife, Lili Rademakers ("Menuet" 1972, "Diary of a Mad Old Man" 1987). Rademakers' 1986 political thriller, "The Assault," won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film.
