Nancy, Joyce, Annie and Bea arrive at the Hoxley Estate and are assigned their duties by Finch and Esther Reeves. Bea rebels from her sister's control and finds herself charmed by Corporal Cal Gillespie, while Nancy tries to get closer to Lord Hoxley.
Bea is pregnant and finding it is difficult to conceal her situation. Sergeant Dennis Tucker is on the look out for enemy sympathisers and focuses his attentions on Nancy. Finch and Martin sell home made carrot whiskey and Lord Hoxley realises that his marriage is over. Annie receives news that her husband has been killed.
Three months later and Nancy and Lord Hoxley are having an affair, Annie is not dealing well with her husband's death and Joyce is hiding her deserter husband, John. Esther has started to screen Nancy's letters for Tucker, who believes that she is a Nazi collaborator. Ernest Luckhurst, a food rations officer, arrives at the farm intent on catching Finch out.
Finch hires some cheap labourers, but following a break in at the manor, Lady Hoxley orders Finch to get rid of them and a riot breaks out. The Hoxley's hold a party, where Joyce tells Lady Hoxley about Nancy's affair with her husband. Billy Finch proposes to Bea, but she goes into labour before she can give him her answer. Annie receives some shocking news about her husband.
Lady Hoxley reveals her husband's secret to Nancy. Bea prepares for her and Billy's wedding, but she realises that Finch has doubts about her. Annie faces a choice over her duty to her husband and her love for Adam Blackfield. Tucker sets out for revenge, which ends with Lord Hoxley's death and shocking consequences for all four girls.
A new girl arrives on the farm; Finch tries to save his pet pig; a wealthy American industrialist visits.
