A scientist working on advanced propulsion technology is killed by a disabled janitor, Roland, who then corrects the man's calculations. Mulder and Scully investigate and find that another recently deceased scientist, whose head is cryogenically frozen, was Roland's twin brother and is controlling him telepathically from beyond the grave.

Dr. Marcus Andrews enlists the help of Dr. Neil Melendez to perform a very sensitive kidney transplant between a pair of twins; Dr. Shaun Murphy decides to take an impromptu trip with his friend Lea and leave his problems behind.

Shaun returns to the hospital after his trip, deciding he needs a more permanent change. The twins suffer complications from their surgery.

When a lonely woman on a blind date is brutally murdered, Mulder links her case to earlier disappearances of women looking for love in the wrong places. Scully's analysis reveals strange discrepancies in the victim's weight and body composition - somehow the killer removed all the fat from the corpse - and he is still out there looking for another victim.
