Under Military Law

Fascist troops are approaching Kiev, well-trained subversive groups are also active; a number of mysterious crimes take place in the suburbs of the city, and military lawyer Ivan Rokotov is entrusted to solve them.

Elagina interrogates one of the suspects, who ends up dying. Later, Grigory Ivanovich, Rokotov's driver, unofficially makes enquiries about the incident among the other soldiers.

Rokotov is interrogated by the NKVD in connection with an investigation into a conflict with a fellow officer.

The NKVD continue to dig into Rokotov while he and Elagina make progress in their investigation; the body of the drowned commissar is found in the river.

Sidorenko from the Central Committee arrives and announces that the prosecutor's office, the police and the NKVD will work together on the new case.

While Mirsky continues his secret investigation, Rokotov finds Ozhogin murdered; Elagina sees that Ozhogin's wound is similar to that of the murdered Lazaryan.
