Trail boss Gil Favor and his ramrod Rowdy Yates leave the herd and race to a nearby town to find doctor for Pete Nolan, who has been badly gored by a steer. After entering the strangely silent town, the two cattlemen discover that they and the rest of the townspeople are the prisoners of Jed Mason and his four sons, who literally take over the town to avenge the mob lynching of the youngest, Mason, accused of murder.

Paladin wakes up after being drugged, beaten and robbed in the town of Blue Bell by five men, one of whom is the town's sheriff.

Gil Favor's determination to shake down his drovers almost costs him his friends and his herd. Gil Favor is determined to shake down his drovers who have had a long period of soft living. When several leave the drive in protest of the forced work, Jess Clayton and a bank of brash young drovers take their place. Gil confides to Wishbone that he fears Scarlet and Quince is getting too old for the work. Rowdy argues with Gil and quits the drive. Jess is named "ramrod" and Rowdy, Scarlet and Quince ride out. Gil pushes ahead until one of the young drovers accidentally stampedes the herd. Gil now realizes the spot he is in with a herd to round up and no experienced men to help him.

Roy Carter is scheduled to be hanged. Another man confesses to the murder just before the execution is to take place. Paladin is hired to try to convince the warden to delay the hanging.

After participating in a wild evening in town with the other drovers, Jim Quince is accused of murdering a prominent townsman. Jim Quince returns from a wild evening in the town of Cottonwood and is taken into custody the next morning by Sheriff Devlin. Quince is accused of having shot down Cottonwood's hero and leading citizen, Maj. Robert Courtney. Trail boss Gil Favor and his ramrod, Rowdy Yates, find the evidence to be only circumstantial, but the townspeople are beyond the point of reason and think only in terms of Quince's blood. The only openly sympathetic person in town seems to be saloon proprietress Della Locke, but she refuses to back Quince when confronted by him and Sheriff Devlin. Meanwhile, the townspeople have become angrier and demand that Quince be hung on the gallows tree. They are stopped, temporarily, at the jail door by Gil and his armed drovers.

Gil Favor and Pete Nolan join the U. S. Army, temporarily, to negotiate a trade of six Army deserters for one Crow Indian chief. Trying to forestall an attack on undermanned Fort Brace by warring Crow Indians, Col. Hiller, the fort's commander, asks his old friend Gil Favor to rejoin the Army as a captain on temporary duty and to negotiate a trade for six soldiers captured by the Crows. Drover Pete Nolan, who knows the Crows well, also rejoins. The Army has agreed to release Crow chief Ogalla, who had given himself up voluntarily at Nolan's request, in exchange for the six men. Favor knows that three of the six hate him enough to kill him because of a court-martial during the Civil War, but he doesn't realize until after the exchange has taken place that the men have deserted and have no intention of returning to the fort. On the way back, one deserter makes a break and Nolan is sent to capture him.

Paladin is lured to Oregon under the pretense of a widow in distress. The real reason is to engage him in a deadly hunt with a bored prince.

In a small town to recruit new drovers, Gil Favor and Clay Forrester get involved in a wedding, a gunfight and a land dispute. In a tiny prairie town to recruit some badly needed drovers, Gil Favor and Clay Forrester are asked to attend the wedding of Frank Louden and Amy Gault. Amy's brother, Carl, arrives at the courthouse just after the wedding, and when he objects to the marriage, Louden kills him in a gunfight. That night, Louden rides in to the drovers' camp to tell Gil that he is in the midst of a land feud with his wife's father, Tom Gault. Unless Gil gets across the Squaw River soon, Louden warns, his herd will be caught in the middle of a range war. When Gil tries to patch up the difference between Louden and Gault, his four new drovers join forces with Louden. Next morning the four, on their horses, are seen across the river and Gill's cattle refuse to cross.

Tamsen Sommers is advertising for a husband, which presents a problem since she already has one. The husband hires Paladin to protect him from the men competing for the right to marry her.

Arriving in a weird tent town to return money to a prospector, Paladin finds himself charged with the man's murder and tried by a kangaroo court.

Paladin crosses paths with Sarah Gibbs on her way to see her husband's hanging for a crime he did commit. A proper burial is all she is seeking but she has a paper that says she can't even visit him.
