S1 E13: Mrs. Frederic (CCH Pounder) reveals to Pete (Eddie McClintock) and Myka (Joanne Kelly) that years ago, Artie (Saul Rubinek) and James MacPherson (Roger Rees) argued over using an artifact to save Carol's (Lynne Cormack) life; the catch: others would die. He took an artifact from Artie - a gold medallion - and entered a burning building to save Carol before disappearing into the night. Five firemen died in the aftermath. Artie hasn't trusted anyone since. The Regents were told MacPherson died in prison... but it seems they were misinformed.
