1919. In a little village sweltering in the summer heat in the Berry region of France, a dog howls day and night at a barrack’s gates. Inside is a single prisoner: the mutt’s master, a man named Morlac. In the countryside nearby, a young woman waits and hopes. She is exhausted by her labor in the fields, yet seems too well educated to be a farm worker.
