Frieda

Frieda

Available on BFI Player Classics
A German Fräulein finds few friends in a British town when she marries an airman and returns with him to England toward the end of WWII. Madly in love with a foreign soldier, Frieda (Mai Zetterling) helps Robert (David Farrar) escape a German POW camp, and although he is appreciative, Robert does not reciprocate her feelings. Regardless, knowing that she risked her life to help him, Robert marries Frieda near the Russian front so that she may return to England with him. Once in Oxfordshire, neither Robert nor Frieda receive a warm welcome. As a German citizen, most of the townsfolk associate Frieda with the footage they have seen in newsreels and newspapers vilifying their wartime foe. In other words, she is guilty by association, a fact that she does not cope with well.
