Soon after America's entry into World War II, Boeing developed a revolutionary four-engine heavy bomber to meet military specifications, the B-17, which eventually became known as the Flying Fortress. It was to be the weapon which the USAAF relied heavily on to press forward with its strategy of daylight, high altitude, and precision bombing unescorted, heavily armed bombers.
