The Germans entered the city of Smolensk on the 16th of July. Novgrod was occupied on August 15th. On September the 8th - Leningrad was encircled. And on the 30th of September the battle of Moscow began - it lasted more than 7 months. The 316th infantry division under the command of General Panfilov held the line defending the route from Volokolamsk to Moscow… In the middle of November, a group of soldiers - all that remained of the 4th Company, 1075th Regiment - managed to hold their ground near the Dubosekovo crossing using only the weapons they carried - they stopped the advancing German troops in their tracks, knocked 18 enemy tanks out of operation and prevented Moscow from invasion. The story of true valour and bravery wrought by ordinary people has become a legend and a symbol of sacrifice.
