Sheer Madness

A regular theme in the work of director Margarthe von Trotta, the relationship between two women is the core concern within this dramatic story. Olga (Hanna Schygulla) and Ruth (Angela Winkler) have different personalities, but develop a friendship nonetheless. Olga is outgoing and brings the reserved Ruth out of her shell. Seeing the benefit of their companionship, Ruth's husband Franz (Peter Striebeck) initially encourages the relationship, but grows increasingly jealous. After the women travel to Egypt together, Franz voices his concerns to Ruth, placing her in a precarious position and her response will be a surprise to most viewers.
