When a young man is found dead of an apparent overdose, Dixon fiercely pursues a homicide investigation as an old unsolved case comes back to haunt her.
There's an escape at the Virginia Correctional Facility. Double D (Michael Kenneth Williams) and Michael Baxter (Stephen Lang) are on the loose. Deputy Marshall Andy Eckerson (Craig Bierko) goes to N.Y. to team up with Detective Benson (Mariska Hargitay) to track them down. Benson and Eckerson are concerned Baxter is going to find his stepson, Lee Healy (Milo Ventimiglia), who said he was raped by his stepfather, and that testimony sent Baxter to jail. They find Lee and his mother, Carin (Nancy Allen), who works with her nephew Jeremy (Jack Noseworthy), and warn them. But it's too late, Baxter kidnapped Lee.
Fifteen year-old Madison Baker (guest star Madison Grace) sneaks out of her uncle’s home to meet breakout movie star Scott Russo (guest star Shiloh Fernandez), who invited her to a party via social media. Later that night, a patrolman finds her in an alley, sexually assaulted and barely alive. Sgt. Benson (Mariska Hargitay) suspects Russo and his manager, Lydia Lebasi (guest star LuPone), are covering up the crime when security footage from the party goes missing. When gossip site mogul Lenny Simmons (guest star John Pankow) airs the stolen footage, he refuses to give up the source material and ADA Barba (Raúl Esparza) takes him to court to find the truth.
A young Middle Eastern man is killed on camera in what appears to be a hate crime. Detectives Ed Green (Jesse L. Martin) and Nina Cassady (Milena Govich) quickly learn that prior to the murder the victim had made a frantic 911 call to the Joint Terrorist Task Force and Detective Henry Paulsen (guest star John Viscardi), who joins in the investigation. Once the suspect, Ben Faoud (guest star Bernardo Pena) is apprehended, A.D.A.s Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston) and Connie Rubirosa (Alana De La Garza) succeed in convincing the F.B.I. that the suspect should be tried for murder. Faoud then hires high-power defense attorney Paul Robinette (returning guest star Richard Brooks), who demands the case be thrown out. S. Epatha Merkerson and Fred Dalton Thompson also star.
Shot in a documentary-style POV, a crime documentary series follows the CSIs for the first 48 hours of an investigation, and we learn why CSI does what they do as they solve the murder of an upscale real estate agent in her glamorous high-rise apartment.
